Land transfer duty discounts

To make it easier for first home buyers to buy a property, they can access land transfer (stamp) duty exemptions and concessions.

First home buyers don’t pay land transfer duty if they purchase a property valued at $600,000 or less, while they receive a concession if they buy a property valued between $600,001 and $750,000.

In 2022–23:

  • 25,945 first home buyers purchased properties for $600,000 or less and paid no stamp duty at all.
  • 10,436 first home buyers purchased properties between $600,001 and $750,000 and received a concession on stamp duty.
  • The total value of 36,381 land transfer duty concessions and exemptions was $712.4 million.

First Home Owner Grant

The First Home Owner Grant (FHOG) continues to help Victorians buy or build their first home. First home buyers who build or buy a new home are eligible for a $10,000 grant, which doubles to $20,000 for new homes in regional areas.

In 2022–23, 11,351 FHOG applications were paid, with a total value of $123.3 million.
